Autumn Splendor at Eikandō: Kyoto’s Premier Fall Foliage Destination

2023.10.20

Known as one of Kyoto’s foremost destinations for autumn foliage, “Eikandō” comes alive each fall. The temple grounds are adorned with about 3,000 Japanese maple trees (Iroha momiji and Ōmomiji) that paint the gardens surrounding the Hōjō pond with vibrant hues. In addition to this natural spectacle, there are numerous other attractions, like the Tahōtō pagoda, which offers a panoramic view of Kyoto. Let us guide you through the must-see spots of this iconic Kyoto tourist destination.

Historically referred to as “Eikandō of the Maples,” by mid-November, the temple is awash in a vibrant palette as nearly 3,000 maples transform its precincts. Visitors can experience the beauty of the foliage from various perspectives, such as the cascading fall leaves, reflections in the water, and the final scattering of the leaves.

Maples Enveloping the Pond

The centerpiece of the temple grounds is the expansive Hōjō pond. Maples planted around the pond create a mesmerizing reflection during the autumn season. The sight of real maple leaves juxtaposed with their mirrored image painting the scenery in crimson is a unique autumn spectacle only to be experienced at Eikandō.

Panoramic Views from the Pagoda Encased in Maples – “Tahōtō”

Standing at the highest point within the temple grounds is the Tahōtō pagoda. The sight of the pagoda enveloped by the fiery hues of the maples is truly surreal. Climbing from the Mikagedō pathway to the Tahōtō allows visitors a breathtaking overhead view of the temple foliage. Additionally, one can take in the sights of the illuminated “Daimonji” and the townscape of Kyoto set against the backdrop of the autumn leaves.
