Nestled in the central part of Hiroshima city lies Shukkei-en, a captivating stroll garden that transports its visitors to a world of tranquillity. Recognized as one of the “Top 100 Historical Parks in Japan,” Shukkei-en has become a beloved staple for both locals and tourists in Hiroshima.
The expansive grounds of the garden feature a pond dotted with various islets, mountains, valleys, and a traditional teahouse. Each corner of the garden is designed to soothe the souls of those who wander through it. As the seasons change, different flora reach their peak, providing ever-changing vistas for visitors. Spring welcomes cherry blossoms and plum trees in full bloom, early summer boasts hydrangeas, and autumn paints the garden with the vibrant colors of maple and ginkgo leaves.
You can explore the primary attractions of the garden within 20 to 40 minutes, making it a perfect detour when touring around Hiroshima.
Positioned at the heart of the garden is Seifū-kan, the largest traditional Japanese structure within Shukkei-en. Although usually off-limits for entry, it opens its doors for special occasions like traditional tea ceremonies.
A charming Japanese-style café nestled within the garden, Sensui-tei offers delightful treats such as matcha, zenzai (red bean sweet), and udon noodles. The café’s traditional architecture adds to its serene ambiance.
