Anago-meshi: A Must-Try Delicacy in Miyajima

Seto Inland Sea, centering on Hiroshima Bay, is famous for its conger eels, and Miyajima is the perfect place to enjoy delicious “anago-meshi.” Anago-meshi consists of grilled conger eel, seasoned with soy sauce, mirin, and other condiments, laid over a bed of rice. It originated as a bento sold near Miyajimaguchi Station, the gateway to Miyajima, in 1901.

The sweet taste of the eel pairs perfectly with rice. Each restaurant serves it in its unique style, so it might be worthwhile to do some research beforehand. When in Miyajima, indulging in this local delicacy is a must.
