Nara Park: A Stroll through History, Nature, and Tranquil Beauty

2023.10.24

Nestled in the eastern district of Nara city, lies a vast expanse of a park stretching approximately 4 km from east to west and 2 km from north to south. This grand park encompasses the spacious precincts of Kasuga Taisha, Kofuku-ji, and Todai-ji, extending to the primeval forests of Kasugayama Primeval Forest, which has been revered as a sacred domain of Kasuga Taisha since the Heian period, untouched by human hands.

Covered with beautiful lawns and pine groves that are over a thousand years old, the park is home to approximately 1,300 deer, frolicking freely. Historical paths once trodden by courtiers of the old capital, such as Tobihino and Yukige-no-sawa, celebrated in the Manyoshu collection of poetry, remain quietly preserved to this day. Beyond these, the gentle slopes of Wakakusayama, Kasugayama, and Takamadoyama hills extend, cradling the ancient city of Nara in a serene embrace.

Deer Feeding Experience

The deer residing in Nara Park are designated as national natural treasures, with a population of around 1,300. Although they are not domesticated, visitors have the unique opportunity to engage in deer feeding experiences using special deer crackers. Every June, the park also hosts a public viewing of the fawns.

Attractions and Scenic Spots

At the center of the park’s beauty is Ukimido Pavilion, a hexagonal gazebo seemingly floating on the water of Sagaike Pond. Its reflection on the water’s surface is especially enchanting, making it a beloved spot for relaxation by the water. The surrounding area boasts a varied landscape and tranquil scenery, including important cultural properties such as Enmado Pavilion and Kataoka Plum Grove.

Access

Nara Park is easily accessible, being just an 8-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station or a 20-minute walk (or 7-minute bus ride on the Nara Kotsu Bus, Outer Loop) from JR Nara Station, alighting at the “Prefectural Office” stop.
