Nestled within Arakurayama Sengen Park, a trove of over 600 cherry trees blooms magnificently each spring, making the park a renowned spot for sakura viewing. Additionally, the park houses the Chureito Pagoda, a five-storied pagoda also known as a monument for the war dead. The breathtaking view from here, where Mount Fuji rises majestically behind the cherry blossoms and pagoda, is a widely recognized scene symbolizing Japan. This view has garnered international fame, attracting numerous tourists from both within Japan and around the world.
Just a few years ago, the Chureito Pagoda was a local spot little known nationally or internationally. However, it has since gained popularity, initially overseas, as a unique location where one can capture the quintessential Japanese symbols of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, and a pagoda in a single frame. Gradually, the site began drawing more domestic visitors as well, and it has now established itself as a famed spot for photographing Mount Fuji. The majority of visitors are international tourists, reaffirming the site’s global popularity. The nearest station, Shimoyoshida Station, consistently sees a high influx of foreign passengers.
The Chureito Pagoda is situated atop a flight of 398 stone steps. While it is possible to drive close to the site, I recommend taking a leisurely stroll up the steps to fully savor the views of Mount Fuji along the way. Fun fact: these steps have long served as a training ground for local students, with some able to ascend in as little as two minutes! If you’re feeling energetic, why not give it a try?
Approximately a 25-minute walk from Fujikyu Railway Shimoyoshida Station to the Chureito Pagoda
