Kaiyukan stands as a magnificent aquarium that meticulously replicates the natural environment of the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific, along with its surrounding seas. Select regions from the Pacific Rim, an area encircled by the Ring of Fire, are recreated within its grand tanks.
Each tank within the facility is strategically positioned to correspond with the actual geographic locations in the Pacific Ocean. From the central tank, where whale sharks gracefully swim, to the “Japanese Forest” tank, teeming with waterfalls and lush greenery, and the “Tasman Sea” tank, home to lively dolphins, Kaiyukan proudly exhibits approximately 30,000 specimens across 620 species. Additionally, the “Jellyfish Galaxy” and the “Arctic Circle” tank, inhabited by harbor seals, are among the popular attractions.
Upon entering Kaiyukan, don’t expect to be immediately greeted by the iconic whale sharks. The viewing route is designed for visitors to descend from the top floor, passing several attractions before reaching the whale shark tank. However, even the initial stages of the journey offer noteworthy experiences. For instance, upon entering the facility, visitors are provided with multilingual pamphlets available in Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Thai— a thoughtful gesture reflecting the increasing number of inbound tourists in Osaka.
The first major attraction is the “Aqua Gate,” a tunnel-like structure with aquarium walls on all sides except the floor. Fish gracefully swim above and beside you, creating an immersive experience that leaves many visitors captivated. It’s a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and those looking to capture a memorable moment.
For a brief and enchanting pause, spend a few moments here, and let the beauty of marine life wash over you.
Starting from the seventh floor, visitors enter the main exhibition area, with various sea creatures organized by theme. The “Monterey Bay” section on the seventh floor features harbor seals and California sea lions, providing a close-up and powerful experience possibly exceeding that of a zoo. The sudden vocalizations and playful swimming of these creatures are sure to capture your attention. Notably, the birth of a sea lion pup in July 2019 offers a heartwarming glimpse into the world of these marine mammals.
The star attraction of Kaiyukan is undoubtedly the whale sharks in the “Pacific” tank, spanning from the sixth to the fourth floor. The sheer size of the tank makes it feel as if visitors have stepped into an underwater realm. Within, two whale sharks glide through the water, showcasing a grandeur that is truly a sight to behold. Patient visitors might even experience the thrill of a whale shark swimming close by.
While the whale sharks draw much attention, the elegance of the rays swimming in the same tank is not to be overlooked. Various species, including manta rays, navigate the water with a graceful fluttering of their triangular fins, creating a mesmerizing ballet.
On the fourth floor, visitors can observe fish during their resting periods, eerily still at the bottom of the tank, reminiscent of a sunken ship.
While Kaiyukan is renowned for its large tanks and grandiose marine life, there is also a section dedicated to the smaller, equally charming creatures of the sea.
Here, visitors first encounter an educational area resembling a jellyfish museum, complete with panels explaining the various species and their lifecycles. A multimedia section provides insights into how Kaiyukan acquires and displays these ethereal creatures.
Beyond the educational area lies the main exhibit, where various jellyfish species illuminate a dark room, creating a surreal and captivating display reminiscent of a galactic dance.
Introduced in 2013, this area offers a unique opportunity to physically interact with marine creatures, specifically sharks and rays, beyond the conventional visual and auditory experiences. In a large tank resembling a fish preserve, visitors can touch these majestic creatures as they swim by.
Please note that outside food and drink are not permitted in Kaiyukan. While there is no restaurant inside, the “Café Mermaid” on the fourth floor provides a bright and inviting space with a view of the Osaka Port. Here, visitors can indulge in unique treats, including the exclusive “Whale Shark Soft-Serve Ice Cream.”
