Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is home to approximately 120 Japanese macaques living in the wild. Throughout the year, these monkeys showcase the changing seasons in their natural behaviors and activities. In spring, they frolic among the cherry blossoms, while in autumn, they play amidst the stunning fall foliage that Arashiyama is renowned for.
Whether it’s forest bathing, interacting with the friendly monkeys, or enjoying the seasonal colors of Kyoto from a panoramic view, Iwatayama is a delightful experience all year round.
The journey from the entrance to where the monkeys are takes about 20 minutes of mountain climbing, starting with a set of 120 steps. Please take your time ascending these. Afterward, the path becomes a gentle slope. The trails are well-maintained, making it accessible for even small children to climb.
At the rest area atop the mountain, feed bags are available for purchase at 100 yen each. You can feed the monkeys from inside the rest area; direct feeding is not allowed to prevent the monkeys from grabbing fingers. Instead, place the feed on the designated feeding shelf. Please note that feeding is only permitted from within the rest area and not outside of it.
