Karatsu Castle: A Coastal Jewel Amidst Cherry Blossoms and Sea Views

2023.11.16

Karatsu Castle, also known as “Maizuru Castle,” stands as a symbol of the coastal town of Karatsu. Free to enter, Maizuru Park around the castle offers a panoramic view of the scenic town from the top floor of the castle’s tower.

The Charm of Karatsu Castle: A Stunning Vista

From the observatory on the top floor, you can take in sweeping vistas of the Genkai Sea and the pine forests. The castle, seen from the outside, evokes images of France’s Mont Saint-Michel, a rare sight in Japan where only a few castles seem to float in the sea. The castle’s structures, including the “Otemon Gate” and “Kesho Yagura” that protected the tower, and the stone walls segmenting the castle’s interior, are a must-see.

Best Season to Visit Karatsu Castle

The best time to visit Karatsu Castle is from late March to early May, when cherry blossoms and wisterias are in full bloom, creating a breathtaking scene with the castle. Also recommended is the summer, especially during the “Kyushu Fireworks Festival,” where you can simultaneously enjoy the tower and fireworks.

Enchanting Nighttime Illumination at Karatsu Castle

The tower is illuminated from sunset until 10 pm. Though the times may vary with the seasons, the castle’s ethereal presence at night is extraordinary. From afar, it casts a solemn and mystical charm, distinct from its daytime grandeur.

Karatsu Castle Amidst About 220 Cherry Trees

The castle grounds are surrounded by approximately 220 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura varieties. The best viewing period is from late March to early April. The trees bloom from the entrance to the tower, welcoming visitors with their elegant beauty. Though slightly off from the wisteria season, the cherry blossoms add a graceful touch to the castle, especially when lit up at night.

Photogenic Moments on the Castle Bridge

The approximately 100-meter-long pedestrian bridge “Jonai Bridge” serves as the entrance to the castle. Crossing the mouth of the Matsuura River, it’s an aesthetically pleasing bridge made of Karatsu stone, Mikage stone, and wood, arching gently over the water.
