Mifuneyama Rakuen, located at the foot of Mifuneyama in Takeo City, is a garden of breathtaking beauty and historical significance. Also known as Tousenzan due to its resemblance to a Chinese boat, the garden was created over three years by the 28th lord of the Takeo domain, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima, initially as a villa.
In spring, Mifuneyama Rakuen comes alive with a vivid display of over 2,000 cherry trees and 50,000 azaleas, reminiscent of Chinese landscape paintings. It hosts various events including tea ceremonies and photography sessions, offering a feast for the senses against the dramatic backdrop of Mifuneyama’s cliffs.
Summer transforms the park into an impressive digital art project by the world-renowned TeamLab. The Mifuneyama Rakuen pond becomes a canvas for 21 mesmerizing art installations, including new creations, offering a unique blend of nature and ultra-technological art.
Autumn in the park is a time of transformation, with a 170-year-old large maple tree, Tsutsuji Valley, Furimuki Slope, and the vast spread of autumn leaves viewed over the pond, creating a picturesque setting that shifts from day to night.
Mifuneyama Rakuen, spanning 15 million square meters, was established in 1845 as a circuit-style garden around a pond. The park was designated as a national registered monument in 2009, recognizing its development from the Edo period, integrating natural landscapes into its garden design.
From mid-July to August, the garden hosts the “Noryo Take Akari,” where about 5,000 lanterns and light objects illuminate the garden, creating an enchanting evening experience.
Located just a 9-minute walk from JR Nishi-Kokura Station, Mifuneyama Rakuen is accessible and enjoyable year-round, offering diverse experiences across the seasons.
