Nestled in Hakone, the Hakone Open-Air Museum stands as Japan’s pioneering outdoor museum. Its most significant appeal lies in its vast outdoor exhibits. Spread across an expansive area of around 70,000 square meters, art pieces are strategically placed. Sometimes, you find yourself looking up at the sky, and at other times, immersing within the artistic realm of the sculptures. It’s a museum designed for a captivating viewing experience.

Unlike conventional museums, the Hakone Open-Air Museum encourages visitors to walk around, engage, and explore. From families with children to solo adult travelers, it offers enjoyment for all age groups.

The Extensive Picasso Collection

The Picasso Pavilion showcases the works of the 20th-century maestro, Pablo Picasso. It was established following a generous donation from Picasso’s eldest daughter, Maya Picasso, comprising 188 ceramic artworks. Today, with over 300 diverse items including paintings, prints, sketches, and ceramic artworks, the collection is unveiled progressively for the public.

Hot Spring Foot Bath

Within the museum’s premises, you’ll find a natural hot spring that’s a 100% direct source flow. As you soak your feet, you can admire the beautiful sculptures and surrounding nature of Hakone.

For those unfamiliar, a foot bath or “Ashiyu” is a bathing method where only the feet are submerged in warm water. Common in hot spring areas, they have become tourist attractions, offering a gentle warmth without the risk of overheating.

After Exploring Art, Enjoy a Cafe Time

After immersing yourself in art at the museum, you might find your stomach grumbling. It’s the perfect time for lunch or a coffee break! Discussing your artistic experiences while basking in the afterglow is bound to be delightful.

“The Hakone Open-Air Cafe” – The Essence of the Museum

The cafe, staying true to the Open-Air Museum’s ambiance, allows you to relax surrounded by trees, while enjoying the sculptures conversing with nature.

Popular Buffet Restaurant: “Bella Foresta”

The museum also boasts the popular buffet restaurant, “Bella Foresta”. From appetizers, main courses, rice dishes, to desserts, there’s a wide selection. Especially recommended for those wanting to dine amidst art. Families can find comfort in child-friendly menu options like french fries, chicken, and bite-sized desserts.

Interesting Special Exhibitions Featuring Unique Artists

While the museum has numerous permanent exhibits, they also host special exhibitions showcasing various artists. These exhibitions change periodically, ensuring new discoveries with every visit. Workshops and events dedicated to art are also organized. Make sure to check the museum’s official website before visiting!
